Ravishing Ravilious

'Midnight Sun', Eric Ravilious, 1940, one of his most captivating war paintings

Fin, aka The Boss, has long been a fan of Eric Ravilious, and so she was excited to find out that the author of her favourite books on the artist, James Russell, was giving a talk on Ravilious’ time in Hammersmith as part of the Greenside Arts Lectures at Greenside Primary School in Shepherd’s Bush.  Greenside Primary School is raising money to renovate the iconic mural by Gordon Cullen in the entrance hall.

The Greenside Mural, in need of some TLC

The mural was created when the school was rebuilt by the influential British Modernist architect, Erno Goldfinger (most famous for the Trellick Tower), and had been hidden behind a red curtain for 20 years as it was considered “unfashionable”.  Gordon Cullen was best known for his Puffin illustrations, and this mural perfectly captures the spirit of the 1950s and the graphic design of the time.  To find out more about the Greenside Arts Lectures, and the project to renovate this beautiful mural, visit their Facebook page here.
