Having been a fixture on the feet of the chicest holidaymakers since the early 20th century, espadrilles have become a key trend in mainstream menswear for S/S 2011. We thought we’d give you a little history on this iconic style, so pay attention, budding fashionistos!
The espadrille first appeared in the Spanish Pyrenees mountains, where they were the traditional choice of slip on for peasants, but has since become synonymous with sun, sea and the laid-back glamour of the Mediterranean. Its appeal has steadily grown and the style has been embraced by the fashion world.
Starting off as the footwear of choice for artists such as Picasso and Dali, many a famous foot has donned a pair of espadrilles. Celebrities such as Catherine Deneuve, Princess Caroline of Monaco, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, JFK, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas and Sophia Loren would don their espadrilles as they leapt off the beach and onto their boats.
In the 1950s and 60s, espadrilles went from cult favourites to fashion must-haves. Yves St. Laurent special ordered espadrilles to be made with a heel, something that had never been done before. They were an instant hit and the fashion world never looked back. And in the 80s, for better or for worse, Don Johnson inspired a style generation with his white suit and matching white espadrilles – not forgetting the mahogany tan.
Today, espadrilles are considered an easy pack and versatile summer slip-on for beach boys of all ages. The new Finspadrille is, in our humble opinion, the Best in Show. We have taken our favourite elements of the style, such as the easy bright cotton canvas choices and chic jute rope detail, and combined it with our signature Fin’s rubber sole and reinforced stitched toe to create an altogether more practical shoe, perfect for beach bums and city slickers alike as the weather heats up.
